Long weekend claims over 20 lives on SA roads

Gauteng traffic volumes started picking up just after lunch as holidaymakers returned to the province after the long weekend.

The Road Traffic Management Centre says by late  Sunday afternoon more than 1 500 cars per hour were coming into Gauteng.

Other major highways including the N1 from Polokwane,in Limpopo, the N3 from Durban in Kwazulu-Natal and N4 from Middleburg in Mpumalanga were experiencing high traffic volumes.

Meanwhile, it’s been a tragic long weekend with a number of road fatalities since the start of the holiday.

Six people died in Limpopo, five people in Eastern Cape, and more than 15 killed in Kwazulu-Natal after an accident between Greytown and Dundee on Thursday.

Authorities say the major causes of road accidents are reckless driving, driving under the influence of alcohol, speeding, the use of cellphones while driving, overloading and unroadworthy vehicles.
