Former South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) Chief Operating Officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng says claims that local content programmes do not generate revenue are false.

During his time as COO, Motsoeneng implemented the 90% local content quota on all SABC platforms.

He says the SABC is now in financial difficulties because he is no longer at the public broadcaster. Hlaudi says during his time there were no financial challenges at the broadcaster and that he compensated employees handsomely.

Motsoeneng has been testifying at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) in Johannesburg where he is challenging his dismissal from the SABC.

“It will show that we said all the programmes that are not performing, we should give them six-months. If they don’t perform, we should introduce new programmes. Most programmes which were not performing it was international content programmes. So local contents generate revenue.  Generations, Muvhango, Uzalo, 7de Laan – I’m just giving you examples of programmes which generated more revenue than international content.  The issue of local content is not generating content is misleading.”
