Listeriosis related cases dramatically down: NICD

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) says it has seen a significant drop in the number of reported listeriosis cases since the recall of food products last month.

At least a 193 people died from listeriosis in the months leading to the recall.

Processed meats were found to be the source of the bacterial illness and led to the closure of Enterprise Food’s Polokwane facility.

Head of the Centre for Enteric Diseases at NICD Juno Thomas says, “The number of cases week on week has come down dramatically since the recall was announced on the forth of March…”

“We expected this to happen after the source of the outbreak had been identified. We do expect to see fewer cases over the next weeks because listeria can have a long incubation period,” added Thomas.
