Durban’s LGBTQI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex) community says they are still being discriminated against at healthcare facilities making it tough for them to seek professional help.

They joined the KwaZulu-Natal Health Department to launch an initiative called “Fabulous About Health”.┬áThe aim of the programme is to raise awareness about the LGBTI community and to eradicate the homophobic attitudes that they sometimes experience when trying to access healthcare services.

Provincial Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu says the department has programmes in place to train healthcare workers and the availability of sector-specific sexual health devices that encourages disease prevention within LGBTQI community.

“We are going to be going out throughout the province to engage with the sector everywhere in the province of KZN and we thought we should start here today and make sure people are aware that as the department of health we are there. We as the department we want to work with the sector we want to make your experience in our facilities better. You tell us how to do that.”
