Lest we forget – the Sharpeville Massacre

President Jacob Zuma will, on Friday, deliver a keynote address at the Human Rights Day commemoration in remembrance of the ruthless Sharpeville massacre that took place 54 years ago.

On the fateful afternoon of 21 March 1960, dozens of protesters in Sharpeville were gunned down by police during an anti-pass law protest. 69 people, including women and children, lost their lives while 180 others were injured in one of the events that changed the course of South African politics.

This year’s theme is “Celebrating 20 years of changing lives through Human Rights,” which is envisaged to provide an opportunity for South Africans from all walks of life to realise that the country is in a better place.

Acting GCIS CEO, Phumla Williams, said, “As we commemorate and celebrate this 20th year of freedom, we must remember that this is the fruit of great sacrifices and pain. We honour those who fought tirelessly so that we can now enjoy freedom. Government remains committed to ensuring the protection of human rights in our country, and will continue to reinforce its commitment to the Bill of Rights as enshrined in our Constitution.”

The day’s activities will commence with the laying of wreaths at the Phelindaba Cemetry at 8 in the morning

The event will be held at George Thabe Cricket Pitch in Sharpeville and amongst other dignitaries expected is Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr SP Mashatile, MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Mr L Maile.

Government has urged all citizens to play their part by ensuring that the country’s human rights record and history are preserved and strengthened for future generations.

The day’s activities will commence with the laying of wreaths at the Phelindaba Cemetry at 8 in the morning.

The President, Ministers, Premier, and other dignitaries are expected to lay wreaths at the memorial site, at around 10h25. President Zuma will deliver his keynote address just after noon with the formal programme scheduled to end just before 13h00.

But the celebrations will continue further with the start of the cultural which will see artists like Uhuru and Chommie entertain the crowd into the afternoon.
