Lesotho opposition parties have pulled out of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) recommended reform process, demanding that the government set aside the suspension of the Chief Justice.

The Chief Justice was suspended last week attracting international condemnation from Judges however the government stands by its decision.

The reforms are intended to lead to the amendment of the constitution and eventual stability, following years of political and security upheaval.

Facilitator – Retired Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke – was upbeat last month when all the parties agreed to participate in the dialogue, but it now appears the process has been derailed.

Lesotho has until end of October to undertake the reforms under SADC guidance before the regional bloc withdraws its oversight committee and standby force from that country.

Opposition participation is crucial to attain the two thirds majority for constitutional amendments but the government suspending the Chief Justice is the deal breaker

The opposition says it will not return to negotiations until the Chief Justice is re-instated.
