The Commission for Gender Equality has joined the DA and the civil rights group AfriForum in demanding that diplomatic immunity granted to Zimbabwe’s former first lady be declared unlawful.
The South African government’s decision to grant Mugabe immunity make it impossible for the NPA to prosecute her.
AfriForum wants Mugabe prosecuted for the assault of a South African model Gabrielle Engels who was with her two sons at a hotel in Johannesburg in 2017.
Applicants have argued that Mugabe’s immunity ceased to exist since her husband Robert Mugabe vacated the position of president.
Engels and her mother are attending the proceedings in the High Court in Pretoria.
