At least 30 shacks burnt down in Durban

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The eThekwini municipality is investigating the cause of the fire that destroyed about 30 shacks at the Kennedy Road informal settlement in Durban.

Residents say the fire started in an unoccupied shack. The owners were apparently away on holidays.

The municipality’s communications officer, Simphiwe Dlamini, says they will be meeting residents to determine what assistance they need.

“It is still unclear what has sparked the blaze, because the majority of the residents were away during the fire outbreak. Our disaster management teams together with the local councillor will return to Kennedy Road informal settlement today to conduct an accurate assessment – with the hope that the owners of those shacks will have returned from holidays. Once we establish who the owners are and then we will be able to offer them necessary assistance. But at this stage we don’t even know who the owners are because when the fire took place they were not there,” says Dlamini.
