Reading Time: 2 minutes

Chief Khoisan SA of the San people and six of his subjects embarked on a protest that saw them residing in tents on the lawns of the Union Buildings.  The group made an arduous  1 200km trek to Pretoria from the Eastern Cape last year to present a memorandum of demands to the President.

Barefoot and only wearing loincloths made from buckskin, they have been camping outside the Union Buildings since November 30 sometimes using the gigantic statue of former President Nelson Mandela as a shade from the scorching sun.

Chief Khoisan says they have numerous demands, the first demand was that we want the government to recognize them as the first nation of South Africa, the second demand is the language on the Coat of Arms. The Khoi want that language to be the official language of the country, the third demand is the land claims of 1913 to be scrapped because they feel it withholds them from making any claims and the fourth demand is that they want the coloured identity to be scrapped.

Chief Khoisan says the laws that have been passed under democracy particularly –  Land Expropriation without compensation, will stir a war in the people throughout the country because it is taking back from the white people which belongs to the Khoi and San people.
