Law must take its course on Zuma: Analyst

Former President Jacob Zuma

Political analyst Lesiba Teffo says former president Jacob Zuma’s legal team should not resort to further delaying tactics by taking the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) decision to prosecute their client on review.

Teffo says the law must take its course, as Zuma has been insisting on being given his day in court.

On Friday, NPA head Shaun Abrahams said Zuma would face fraud, corruption, racketeering and money laundering charges.

This was after considering a report by a team of prosecutors who were studying Zuma’s representations into why he should not be prosecuted.

The charges were dropped in 2009 by then acting NPA head Mokotedi Mpshe, citing manipulation of prosecutorial processes by senior prosecutors.

The High Court in Pretoria however, nullified the decision last year.

“And indeed he will have his day in court as he has asked for it. He can delay, he can dilly-dally but I think the circumstances are narrowing to a point where he will have to face the law. I’m looking forward to that day, so that he can acquit himself… but at least present himself and let the court pronounce… but let’s give him a chance, he has asked for it, nudge him towards the court until at least he can face his day,” says Teffo.
