Moerane commission hears Magaqa was on a hit-list

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Former ANC Youth League secretary general Sindiso Magaqa’s killers followed him to hospital and killed him.  This is according to his cousin Lwazi Magaqa. He told the Moerane Commission that Sindiso was poisoned while recuperating in hospital.

Magaqa was ambushed and shot in Umzimkhulu in July 2017 and died in hospital seven weeks later.

Lwazi Magaqa told the commission his cousin was recovering well in hospital, when all of a sudden he developed stomach cramps and died.  Lwazi said the family believes he was poisoned to silence him, as he was vocal about corruption at the Umzimkhulu municipality.  He claims two sets of post-mortem results have been inconclusive.

“Sindiso was shot on the lower body and the time of his death, he was to start physiotherapy… now it was a shock to the family to hear that Sindiso passed away.”

Lwazi also testified that his cousin was close to Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema and would have been in the party’s top structures if he joined it, but his love was for the ANC.

Meanwhile the wife of another Umzimkhulu slain councillor, Mduduzi Tshibase, is scheduled to testify on Tuesday.

The Moerane Commission is probing political killings in KwaZulu Natal.
