De Lille says she’s not solely responsible for unqualified audit

Cape Town Mayor, Patricia De Lille, says she is not solely to blame for the downgrade of the City’s audit finding by the Auditor-General from clean to unqualified.

Reports say the downgrade is blamed on alleged financial mismanagement in the city council under her leadership.

De Lille says according to the law, the role of the Mayor of the City is only to give political direction, while the Mayor is not allowed to interfere with the administration.

She says other City officials should also be held responsible for the downgrade.

“The Auditor-General said that the leadership of the City, that includes the Chief Financial Officer, that includes the City Manager, that includes the Executive Directors, they all have got a role to play in terms of the Municipal Finance Management Act. So to make a blanket statement that I’m to blame for everything is simply not true,” says De Lille.
