Communications minister downplays SABC COO appointment rumours

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Communications minister Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane says she is not aware of any appointment of a new Chief Operating Officer (COO) for the SABC.

Media reports say MTN Group Executive for Corporate affairs Chris Maroleng has been earmarked for the top post at the public broadcaster, and that he’s due to start his new job next month.

However the SABC says it has not yet finalised the appointment processes.

Kubayi-Ngubane says appointments of executives must follow due process.

The Minister’s spokesperson, Ireen Magwai says part of the process would see the minister informing cabinet of the appointment.

” The Minister is not aware of the appointment of the appointment of the COO of the SABC. Because our understanding is that the Minister has to be consulted on any appointment at the SABC, and she has to take the appointment though the Cabinet processes. And then the Cabinet would be informed of the appointment and they would then make an announcement on the outcome on the appointment. So that process has not been followed. At this point Minister has no knowledge of any official appointment,” said Magwai.
