The bail application of an under-21 Blue Bulls rugby player has been postponed to next week.  The player from the Eastern Cape is facing rape charges.

The young player appeared briefly in the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court on Monday.  He was arrested late in December in Port Elizabeth.  An 18-year-old woman opened the case against him.

The incident sparked outrage from the community and family members who picketed outside court.

Social media has been abuzz since the incident came to light. Some have expressed disappointment while others are supporting the suspect.

The player has not entered a plea and he has been in custody since his arrest.

Meanwhile, a 33-year-old rugby player is expected to appear in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court on a charge of murder.  It’s alleged that he stabbed his ex-girlfriend to death and also stabbed and injured himself.

The 33-year-old Universal Club rugby player in Kimberley has been admitted to hospital. He’s being kept under police guard.

The two incidents have once again shone the light on the country’s femicide statistics rate, reported at five times more than the global average.
