More than 1 000 women participated in the Pap Smear campaign to screen for cervical cancer at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital.
KwaZulu-Natal Health MEC Dr. Sibongiseni Dhlomo says this is the highest number of screenings they’ve ever done.
Dhlomo says he’s is quite happy that the campaign is such a success.
“We’ve already picked up serious cancer on 10 women of the 200 we’ve seen on Saturday morning. So, we’re happy, because we were aiming to have a 1 000 of women here on Saturday. As you can see the numbers are going to 3 000. It’s overwhelming – and we’re going to try our best to see all 3 000. We’re positively happy because this cancer, cancer of the cervix is preventable, but number two it’s treatable if you come much earlier.”
