KZN health dept reveals new method of screening cervical cancer

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Health Department in KwaZulu-Natal has unveiled a liquid-based cytology as a new method of screening cervical cancer. The method is said to be more efficient than a pap smear.

The department is on a drive to get more women to test regularly for preventable cancers such as breast and cervical.

Fourty one-year-old Alice Sibiya was diagnosed with stage 2 cervical cancer four years ago. The mother of two believes early detection saved her life. She is now cancer free and shares her experience.

“I wasn’t ill when I went to the clinic to do a pap smear, but it helped me detect the cancer early and if I hadn’t gone to the clinic I would be dead by now, because there are a lot of women who may have cancerous symptoms, but are reluctant to seek help.”

In South Africa cancer is on the rise with cervical cancer also prevalent in those living with HIV.  Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, KZN Health MEC elaborates, “We would want to appeal to our women to come to our clinics and we’re also going to go out into the community. Put up tents where we are going to be screening, because it’s that important that we need to have all women be taken care of.”

Government is also providing HPV Vaccine to girls as young as nine who are not yet sexually active in order to prevent cervical cancer.
