The Pinetown Regional Court, in KwaZulu-Natal, has heard graphic statements from women that were both brutally raped and robbed at knife point by convicted serial rapist Moses Mavila. His sentencing has been set down for the 24th of July.

Mavila pleaded guilty to 61 counts of rape, attempted rape and robbery, which he committed on women in Durban between 2013 and 2019.

The courtroom was packed to capacity with more than 30 of Mavila’s victims. The 27-year-old man lured the unsuspecting women on the pretence of getting them employment.

Most of the rapes took place along the M19 highway in Westville.

State Prosecutor Sizwe Khanyile read out impact statements from 10 victims who all said Mavila’s brutality caused them to fear for their lives. They say their lives have completely changed. They are often angry at those close to them.

One victim, who was six months pregnant when she was raped, said she begged him not to harm her unborn child.

Three of the victims were brutally assaulted and one was left with a fractured leg.
