Reading Time: < 1 minute

eThekwini Metro police officers have been deployed in large numbers at Durban’s busy beaches.

The safety of children is being prioritised, through identification wrist bands that contain the details of their parents or guardians in the event children get lost.

The initiative has also created jobs for child-minders who walk along the beach urging people to register for these tags.

“We are expecting a number of thousands of people from different provinces. We want to make sure that they feel safe around Durban since it’s the warmest place to be. For the young kids we do have tags of which we put them on their arms. It has got the details of their parents. We do not allow people to come and swim while under the influence (of alcohol),” says Metro Police Inspector Nomcebo Ndlovu.
