Kimberley residents still without water

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Kimberley residents have now been left without water for four days.  This despite promises from the Sol Plaatje Municipality that they will meet their deadline to restore water by midnight on Sunday following an infrastructure upgrade. Residents are now feeling the pressure.

“I guess from my side we just have to be a bit patient. Because they are trying their best to get the water back on,” says resident, Michelle Smith.

“There is no water, I’m frustrated, it is an inconvenience, I’m not at work and I’m supposed to be there, my kids are not at school, it’s really not on,” says another resident, Neo Moseki.

The delay is believed to be at the Mental health site and once it has been sorted, water supply to the city can start.

“This one we ran into unexpected delays. We had to pump out water to ensure that people should be able to work, the volume of water that was still coming out was quite high and we’ve managed now to empty this particular portion, and the next stage will be the installation of the piece that has been removed,” says Sol Plaatje Municipality spokesperson Sello Matsie.

Last year the problem lasted for about a week.

The Sol Plaatje Municipality does not want to give a time frame as to when the problem will be resolved.

Meanwhile, two areas in the Northern Cape are struggling with water supply issues.

Makhubung village residents near Heuningvlei in the Northern Cape haven’t had access to clean running water for 13 years.

Their only water source is a wetland nearby the village which they have to share with animals.
