The Sobukwe family says it is delighted with news that the Kimberley Hospital will be renamed Robert Sobukwe Hospital.

The name change was announced by Northern Cape premier, Sylvia Lucas during her State Of the Province Address (SOPA).

Sobukwe, the founder of the PAC, took his last breath at the Kimberley Hospital just over 40 years ago, after his banishment to the city by the Apartheid government.

Sobukwe’s son, Tebello Sobukwe says, “He won people over and they got to love him a lot and they did through associations with him in everyday life as an article clerk and as a member of the Methodist Church in Kimberley. They got to like him and I think it’s a great honour to him and the family. We are very, very pleased with that.”
