Khabo Zondo on Bafana, Pitso and Vision 2022

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Former Bafana Bafana assistant coach Khabo Zondo says local coaches should be given an opportunity to be in charge of the national team.

There is a debate whether a local or foreign coach should be in charge of the team after Englishman Stuart Baxter resigned few weeks ago.

Molefi Ntseki has been appointed interim coach until a permanent replacement is found. Bafana is searching for their 23rd coach in 23 years since post-isolation in 1992.

Zondo believes that former Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane should be given another opportunity to coach the national team.

Mosimane was an assistant to Brazilian coach Carlos Alberto Parreira, and subsequently took over after the 2010 FIFA World Cup on home soil. Zondo was a co-coach for Bafana with Mosimane at some point.

The South African Football Association (SAFA) came up with the so-called vision 2022 several years ago, with the aim of targeting the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in three years’ time.

But Bafana have not qualified for the global showpiece since the 2002 edition in Korea/Japan. It remains to be seen if they will reach Qatar in three years’ time.

Zondo is sceptical about the vision.

The 57-year-old also coached several teams in the elite league. He also lamented the fact that there is no depth in quality players to choose from for the national team. – Report by Vincent Sitsula
