Kenya elections to go ahead as planned

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Chairman of the Kenya’s electoral commission says presidential elections will go on as scheduled on Thursday.

Wafula Chebukati made the announcement hours after the Supreme Court was unable to hear a petition filed by three human rights activists to cancel the elections due to the lack of a quorum.

Chief Justice David Maraga says only two out the seven Supreme Court judges were available to hear the petition.

The Supreme Court ordered fresh polls after the August 8th elections were annulled over illegalities and irregularities.

Hours before the rerun Kenyans were not sure if the polls would indeed take place.

On the eve of the ruling, the driver of the Deputy Chief Justice Philemona Mwilu was shot and injured by unknown assailants. The opposition sees the government’s hand in it.

With the collapse of the case, the chairman of the commission cleared the way for the polls.

Opposition leader Raila Odinga has called on his supporters to boycott the elections, claiming that the electoral commission is biased.

President Uhuru Kenyatta who is seeking a second and final term, has called on Kenyans to turn up and vote.

The African Union has called for calm and restraint during the electoral period.

Polls will open at 6am and close at 5pm on Thursday.
