Keiskammahoek residents demand improved roads

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Protesting residents of Keiskammahoek in the Eastern Cape clashed with police on Monday. The protest centres on service delivery particularly roads in the area.

A municipal building has been torched as residents embark on a protest demanding better services, especially roads and RDP houses.

Earlier today, they blockaded the road with burning tyres. They have vowed to continue with their protest until President Cyril Ramaphosa comes and listens to their demands.

Three weeks ago residents took to the streets to vent frustrations over poor road infrastructure. Rural areas need to be linked to health facilities.

One protester died when police fired rubber bullets.

Residents from 35 villages are now calling on President to intervene. They say talks at local and provincial level have not been successful.

SANCO has condemned the torching of the municipal building at Keiskammahoek during a service delivery protest. SANCO chair Gugulethu Siwendu says they will do all in their power to find the perpetrators.

“We are not responsible for the torching of the municipal building. We discovered that there is four guys who torched the building we tried to catch them but they ran away. We cannot be associated with such incidents, we don’t know anything about that. Our march is peaceful.”
