KaNyamazane residents embark on violent protest

Residents of KaNyamazane township, east of Mbombela, Mpumalanga, have embarked on a violent protest blockading roads in and out of the area.

The protest has also affected schooling and many people could not go to work.

Police spokesperson, Mtsholi Bhembe says the protesters are also targeting foreign owned shops.

He says residents are blocking roads with burning tyres, rocks and tree branches.

“We also got reports that foreign owned shops are being attacked. No arrests have been made as yet but cases of public violence, damage to property and assault have been opened.”

The situation remains tense but police are monitoring.
