The Verulam Magistrate’s Court, north of Durban, has denied the bail application of former Ethekwini Municipality Councillor Kessie Nair who called President Cyril Ramaphosa the derogatory K-word in a video he posted on social media a month ago.

Nair remains in custody but the court earlier ordered that he be sent for mental observation.

Magistrate Ncumisa Gcolotela told the court that Nair failed to convince the court that his release on bail would be in the interest of justice.

In her judgment, she said he showed no remorse for his actions and appeared to not understand the serious nature of the crime he had committed.

Nair was arrested in September after he posted a video on social media calling president Cyril Ramaphosa the derogatory K-word.

Magistrate Gcolotela also ordered that the conduct of Nair’s attorney, Chris Gounden be investigated with regards to his submission of the replying affidavit.
