Disaster management teams in KwaZulu-Natal have been put on high alert as four people were killed in heavy thunderstorms overnight in several parts of the province.

The 21-year-old Nelisiwe Mbhele and her 11-year-old family member Nonhlanhla were killed when they were struck by lightning in the Emabeleni area on the South Coast.

At Ndwedwe, north of Durban, two men drowned in the Mona River when they were swept away by a flash flood as they were walking home.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance, Nomusa Dube-Ncube says the province’s disaster management teams have been put on high alert due to severe thunderstorms this time of year.

She asked the public to comply with the warnings and requests of these teams.

Meanwhile, clean up operations all around Gauteng following a devastating hailstorm which swept through the province on Saturday.

Families were left stranded, even those who are away on holiday have been warned that they might come back to wrecked homes. This Protea Glen family says the roof of their home collapsed and now they have to find a way to fix the damage , they are angry about the workmanship of the house they have only lived in for six months.

“There was a storm this side, you can just see the damage, the houses have been damaged, the structure of the house is not up to standard if this can happen.”

This lady also in Protea Glen does not know where to start re-building her house which she had turned into a creche.

“My concern is the kids are supposed to come here on the 8th. I don’t know how I am going to accommodate them. How i am going to build i don’t know, the mayor came but he did not make any commitment.”

Over 50 RDP houses were blown off in the West Rand. Infrastructure Development MEC Jacob Mamabolo says they will be looking at whether shoddy workmanship is the reason behind so many RDP homes going down.
