The joyous celebrations are continuing in the streets of Zimbabwe following President Mugabe’s resignation.

Mugabe resigned a short while ago in a letter submitted to parliament.

Wild jubilation broke out among MPs when Speaker Jacob Mudenda told the House.

His letter reads as follows: “I Robert Gabriel Mugabe hereby formally tender my resignation as President of Zimbabwe with immediate effect. These residents say they will never allow another leader to stay in office this long.”

Zimbabwe’s former vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa will be sworn in as president on Wednesday or Thursday.

Zimbabwe African National Union – Patriotic Front’s legal secretary Patrick Chinamasa has confirmed this after the resignation of Robert Mugabe earlier on Tuesday tonight.

ZANU-PF chief whip Lovemore Matuke says that Mnangagwa will serve the remainder of Mugabe’s term until the next general elections, which must be held by September 2018.
