Jordaan says CAF needs to improve

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Newly appointed Confederation of African Football (CAF) Vice-President Danny Jordaan has admitted that there are a lot of things that need to improve at the continental mother body before they can regain their rightful place in world football again.

Jordaan was speaking after he was confirmed by CAF President Ahmad Ahmad as the third Vice-President following the demotion of Vice- President Amaju Pinnick from Nigeria.

Speaking to SABC Sport at the Marriot Hotel in Cairo, Egypt, Jordaan says CAF has to get to a point where the AFCON tournament doesn’t get dominated by political matters.

Jordaan comes at a time when the CAF Congress has just approved the assistance of its mother body in helping to turn around the embattled continental football body administratively.

The South African Football Association (SAFA) President says he’s full of support for the move to bring FIFA Secretary-General Fatma Samoura to come and assist CAF.

The decision to elevate Jordaan to a VP position comes just a year after Pinnick had replaced Kwesi Nyantankyi after he was sunk by corruption and bribery allegations. The former 2010 World Cup Local Organising Committee CEO looked back at how he ascended to this position.

Meanwhile, the draw for the AFCON 2021 qualifiers also took place on Thursday and Bafana Bafana find themselves in Group C with Ghana, Sudan and the winner of Mauritius vs Sao Tome Principe.

The first game in the group stages will take place in November and Jordaan says after doing well in Egypt, Bafana should do well with a youthful team at the next AFCON qualifiers. Report by Velile Mnyandu
