Jordaan re-elected unopposed as SAFA president

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Danny Jordaan has been re-elected unopposed as the president of the South African Football Association (Safa).

Former referee Ace Ncobo pulled out of the race before the elections at the Safa’s congress earlier on Saturday in Sandton paving the way for Jordaan’s re-election.

Ncobo  said part of the reason he’s pulling out is that Safa did everything to ensure that Danny Jordan is re-elected to the position again. So he doesn’t want to be part of a process that is illegitimate, unconstitutional and in breach of the very statute of Safa.

Ncobo walked-out of the congress.

More candidates showed their willingness to stand for the presidency, but they were found to be ineligible to contest the elections — most notably, former SAFA vice-president Mwelo Nonkonyana and former Bafana Bafana captain Lucas Radebe, because they were not active members within SAFA structures.

This is Jordaan’s second term after he was elected in 2014.

Meanwhile, 39 candidates, including former national coach Shakes Mashaba and former Bafana Bafana striker Phillemon Masinga, will contest for the 10 positions in the national council.

Three SAFA vice-presidents will also be elected, one of which should be a woman.

Current executive members Nomsa Mahlangu and Ria Ledwaba are believed to be the two front-runners.
