Johannesburg residents warned of heavy rains

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Johannesburg residents have been warned to avoid crossing flooded bridges and those living in low lying areas to move to higher ground to avoid getting swept away. The South African Weather Service has warned of heavy down pours throughout the city and surrounding metros.

“We just want to encourage our residents who are living in the river banks, areas like Stwetla in Alexandra and Kliptown in Soweto to make sure that they monitor the water levels and move to higher ground,” says City of Joburg Emergency Services Spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi.

Meanwhile, Johannesburg Metro Police Department Spokesperson Wayne Minnaar has also urged motorists to be extra vigilant on the road.

“There have been accidents reported this afternoon (Friday) at Northcliff, Soweto, in the CBD where there are injuries as well as on the N1. Motorists are reminded to drive with extra caution in the rain and it is necessary to keep a safe following distance.”
