Johannesburg property owners object valuations

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Johannesburg residents, whose properties have allegedly been over-valued, have been flocking to various centres across the city to lodge objections ahead of Friday’s deadline.

The City of Johannesburg says those who are not able to visit any of the 12 walk-in venues can lodge their official complaints on the city’s website before the deadline.

Frustrations have been running high  at the Thuso House with some residents claiming that the value of their properties has more than doubled.

One of the property owners says his rose from 270 000 to over R600 000.

“Basically approximately 131-percent increase,” says the property owner.

“It was considerably over-valued to the extent of about 35-40-%,” added another concerned resident.

A man whose property value rose from R330 to 420 000 is not hopeful his objection will succeed.

“I don’t think so because here the problems occur more and more,” he said.
