Jazz festival highlights gender-based abuse

Women artists should use the stage to highlight women abuse.  This was the message by several musicians at the annual Imbokodo Jazz Festival this weekend in Durban.

To celebrate Women’s Month, the line-up featured predominantly women jazz artists from South Africa. Electrifying performances from jazz artists ignited the crowd. Female artists showcased their craft.

“We’ve always wanted to do something that empowers women. In the music scene it’s mostly guys so when you find another girl that plays an instrument or sings really well. It’s always nice to come together and empower each other,” said drummer Rebekah Daughety.

Now in its second year, the annual Imbokodo Jazz Festival continues to grow as it is now enjoyed by an international audience.

Jazz lovers were in for a treat but an important message.

Women in music have been encouraged to use their art to address problems in society.

“Because we have these challenges that we have as a society, yes we must use all platforms that will help us  take the message across,” said jazz legend Sibongile Khumalo.
