A producer of the South African film, Inxeba, Cait Pansegrouw, has lodged a complaint with the Human Rights Commission after death threats and intimidation against its production staff and moviegoers.

On Friday, a group of more than 30 people, including traditional leaders, marched to the Hemingways casino complex in East London to protest against the movie’s previously planned screening.

Groups also protested outside theatres in Cape Town, leading to the temporary suspension of screenings.

Protesters are apparently unhappy over the depiction of initiation, saying it ridicules the ritual custom of initiation and refers to Jesus and Shaka Zulu as having been gay.

Pansegrouw says she is disappointed by the threats, saying the reaction by those who had seen the movie, had created positive dialogue.

“It’s not an easy film; it is meant to challenge you. It asks a lot of tough questions of its audience, and I think particularly of Xhosa men who have gone through this ritual, which is sacred. So we always knew the film was going to very controversial – but what we didn’t expect was people resorting to violence.”
