The internationally acclaimed tenor Sidwell Hartman has passed away in Cape Town while teaching at the University of Cape Town (UCT) on Thursday.

The Associate Professor of vocal studies was 63.

Colleague, Professor Rebekka Sandmeier, says she will remember Hartman for his passion for acting and singing.

“What impressed me so much about his work was that he brought his international experience back home and passed it onto the students and you can see it in his students. Because they now go abroad and again put into place what they learned from him. You know that he’s at the college because you can hear the singer’s voice. He always had this booming and projecting voice so you always knew when he was around and that was so nice.”
