ANC inquiry to investigate E Cape elective conference

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The African National Congress (ANC) has set up a panel of inquiry to investigate the outcome of last month’s chaotic leadership elective conference in the Eastern Cape.

Disgruntled party members in the Amathole region called on the ANC National Executive Committee not to recognise the newly elected executive.

The ANC NEC has now established a panel of four members led by former KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sbu Ndebele to investigate appeals by branches in the province.

Briefing the media in Johannesburg, ANC Secretary-General Gwede Mantashe rejected calls for the nullification of the outcome of the conference, adding that they will take a final decision based on the outcomes of the panel’s investigations.

“The PEC is always in charge of the regions.  There is a PEC elected in the province and it is not nullified until the NEC nullifies it.  It remains the PEC of the Eastern Cape.  The panel will investigate and we must not pre-empt the outcomes and nullify prematurely.”
