Ninety male initiates were welcomed in KwaMhlanga in Mpumalanga on Saturday. The Ingoma Forum, established to regulate initiation schools, commended their safe return after spending two months away.

Mpumalanga recorded two deaths this year compared to 31 in 2013.

The boys spent two months at initiation schools to complete a rite of passage into manhood. It’s an experience demonstrating strength and endurance.

After spending months in the bush and sitting half naked in the freezing cold, they can now call themselves young men.

Local chiefs have urged the young men to respect their parents and community, and focus on education.

Two deaths were recorded, compared to 11 last year and a shocking 31 in 2013. One boy died from a snake bite and a 51-year-old man from natural illness.

All ages are allowed at initiation schools.

Traditional leaders say they are winning the battle against initiation deaths in Mpumalanga.

But illegal initiation schools remain a challenge.
