India’s southern Kalaburagi city recorded its hottest day of the year on Thursday with the mercury touching 42.3 degrees Celsius.

An official of India Meteorological Department, Kalaburagi, Ashok Bidap, said the temperatures in the city were higher (than normal) like previous years and a heat wave warning had been sounded.

Meanwhile, residents in eastern Gaya city used scarves to cover their heads and faces as they stepped out in the scorching sun on Friday. Juice vendors did brisk business. Gaya recorded the maximum temperature of 38 degrees Celsius.

Summers in India are a difficult time when soaring temperatures lead to numerous casualties. Possible reasons for the rising temperatures range from global warming to greater urbanisation, leading to taller buildings and diminishing green cover.
