The Electoral Commission (IEC) says it’s making steady progress with the counting and verification of election results in Gauteng.

The province has the largest number of registered voters, about 6.3 million.

The commission says it is still awaiting results from the big three metros in Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Tshwane.

The IEC says most of the voting stations in Gauteng had long queues even after the official close of polling stations at 9pm on Wednesday night.

Acting Gauteng IEC provincial officer Thabo Masemola says:”Because most of the results have been received. The three metros and the two districts are currently verifying those results and after verification we capture and the auditors also audit our results.”

“As the province we hope to conclude and collate our results by end of the day, tomorrow afternoon.”
