IEC hopes it will meet its voter registration target

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says despite some challenges, the first day of voter registration went well and they are hoping to meet their target of a credible and complete voters roll for the 2019 elections.

A 2016 ruling by the Constitutional Court required the IEC to update the voters’ roll with complete addresses. The IEC does not have addresses for 2.8 million voters and a further 3.5 million addresses are incomplete.

On Saturday there were numerous disruptions around the country in areas such as Vuwani in Limpopo, Marikana in the North West and the Free State. Deputy Electoral Officer Nomsa Masuku says they hope more eligible voters will register on Sunday.

“Given the excitement around this registration what we have seen, what the politicians have done, they’ve gone all out and they’ve created a lot of vibe. The thing about elections, you need that vibe so that people feel inspired to come out. Now given that, we are quite happy that we’ll meet our target. However we will wait and see by tomorrow (Sunday) whether that translates into that 2.8 million coming to give us those addresses.”
