This past weekend was the final voter registration weekend. The Electoral Commission (IEC) confirmed that 99% of its 22,925 voting stations opened on time to a steady stream of eligible voters, but also that 140 voting stations did not open due to community protests and bad weather.

The IEC will be making concessions in at least two provinces where communities were unable to register over the weekend.

Chief Electoral Officer of the Electoral Commission Sy Mamabolo says a report of the number of people who registered to vote will hopefully be released on Tuesday morning.

Mamabolo says the IEC is happy with how well the network held up.

“They held up well and we are happy that the improvements that have been made on the network. I think we just need to consolidate plans so that we can deliver a decent election day later in the year.”

People can still visit the local offices of the Electron Commission between 8am – 5pm to register to vote before President Cyril Ramaphosa announces the election date.
