Black Leopards midfielder Thabo Matlaba says he is not scared to step up and lead the side on a long term base.

Matlaba, who signed in pre-season was given the armband on debut against provincial rivals Polokwane City in their first match of the 2019/20 Absa premiership season on Sunday.

Leopards have not announced a new permanent skipper following the departures of Marks Munyai and Jean Munganga last season.

Matlaba clarifies that he was not given the armband permanently, but would take up that responsibility if offered.

The 31-year-old was disappointed that his first match with the club ended in a loss. Leopards lost 1-0 to City in Thohoyandou on Sunday.

Matlaba says fans expected a win especially with the club’s new acquisitions.

The former Orlando Pirates man also pleads for patience on coach Lionel Soccoia who is also new in the club saying the team will jell soon. Report by Lethabo Kganyago
