Honouring an unsung hero Makwena Matlala

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The first African woman banished by the apartheid regime Makwena Matlala, is being honoured on Monday.

Arts and Culture Deputy Minister Rejoice Mabudafhasi will unveil Matlala’s burial and commemoration site in Ga-Matlala, south west of Mokopane in Limpopo, to honour a woman she describes as an “unsung hero”.

Speaking on Morning Live, Mabudafhasi says that they left the celebration for the last day of Women’s month so that the special unsung hero could have her moment without being clouded by other events.

“We want the coming generations to know the real truth about Makwena Matlala, we don’t want information that somebody who was told by someone else to tell the story of Matlala. Everyone must know the role played by women in the struggle of apartheid,” says Mabudafhasi.
