N Cape writers festival inspire upcoming writers

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The annual Northern Cape Writers Festival in Kimberley has come to an end. Its aim is to create a platform for all potential writers and readers.

Organisers say they want more authors to submit and publish work in indigenous languages.

Several renowned authors, including EKM Dido and Diana Ferrus are among those attending.

Organizer and author, Sabata Mpho Mokae says writers want to increase reading culture.

“As writers, we are hoping that readership will increase. That’s one of the things we are hoping to achieve, but also to encourage the culture of reading. Reading broadens the horizons and it engages a person’s mind. So, we’re hoping that a lot of people will adopt reading as a form of entertainment in their homes.”

The encouragement of writers was central to the festival.

“These young people represent our future and events like these are what show them that we appreciate them and that they are on the right track, even though writing and literature are very difficult because they don’t get the accolades. It is up to us to really make a special effort and encourage the young writers. It is a lonely endeavour to make sure they stick with it,” said author, Dr Lesego Malepe.

Aspiring writers had the opportunity to meet their favourite authors.

Organisers say the event has grown significantly through the years.
