HFA members deny racial profiling of doctors

The Health Funders Association (HFA) says their interaction with their members, which include 25 Medical Schemes and three Medical Scheme Administrators, indicates there is no deliberate racial profiling of doctors.

The Chairperson of the board of the Health Funders Association, Teddy Mosomothane, is testifying at the Section 59 Investigation at the Council for Medical Aids in Centurion, south of Pretoria.

Mosomothane says they are looking forward to the findings of the panel to clear the allegations.

He did, however, say they are not dismissing the doctor’s allegations that the schemes focus on black and Indian doctors for forensic audits and stopping their payment due to allegations of fraud, waste and abuse.

“Our interaction with the medical schemes and administrators suggests that partly because of the fact that there is no data collected as far as race is concerned, the argument is made that it is impossible to racially profile doctors, in particular. We find the arguments that are made quite plausible, but we also don’t want to be dismissive of the allegations that have been raised,” explains  Mosomothane.
