Heavy security presence as UCT exams begin

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The University of Cape Town (UCT) says it’s all systems go as exams start at the institution on Wednesday.

Learning has been disrupted at the university over the past two weeks as a result of student protests.

The university has had to increase security following the unrest.

Strict safety measures have been put in place at exam venues.

UCT Spokesperson, Elijah Moholola says it has been forced to implement these measures.

“We have had to construct a single venue which can be secure and which can provide an environment where students can write without having to worry about the possibility of having it being disrupted. So that venue is being constructed on upper campus, that’s where all our exams sessions are going to be taking place. It’s a regrettable situation we find ourselves repeatedly saying that the presence or the heavy presence of security and even the SAPS on campus is something that executive would not have preferred.”
