The Hawks have arrested two suspects thought to be part of a syndicate issuing illegal vehicle roadworthy certificates in the Western Cape.

The two aged between 61 and 64 are expected to appear in court on Wednesday on charges of corruption.

The first suspect was arrested at a house in Shaanti Crescent, in Rylands, on Tuesday morning. Moments later, the second one was arrested at the A2 vehicle testing centre in the Athlone industrial area.

Seven years ago, the testing centre operated under a different name. It was shut down by traffic authorities after the Hawks arrested the owner and charged him with fraud and corruption.  It was raided again on Tuesday.

“Two suspects aged 61 and 64 were arrested on Tuesday morning, they part of a syndicate that issues false roadworthy certificates in this province, they due to appear in the Vredenberg Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning,” says Hawks spokesperson captain Lloyd Ramovha.

The Hawks say some of the vehicles which were issued with illegal road worthy certificates were from the West Coast where the suspects will make a court appearance. It’s alleged that the vehicles were not present at the testing station.

The possibility of more arrests has not been ruled out.
