The man at the centre of an alleged racial killing at Kathu in the Northern Cape is expected to know on Monday if he will get bail.

Thirty three year-old Harry Kotze has been in custody since he allegedly drove his bakkie into a group of men killing one and seriously injuring another.

The alleged racially motivated attack has shocked the small mining town.

Kotze faces a schedule six offence for premeditated murder.

The state alleges he drove his bakkie into the group of four men last month.

The incident is said to have happened after an altercation between Kotze and the victims.

Twenty year-old Elcardo Crew died on arrival at hospital, while his friend, Eshric Molino was seriously injured.

Molino says, “Who does something like this, drive over someone and kills them because of swearing at each other. What type of person does that?”

Community members opposed bail during Kotze’s last court appearance.

The court heard that Kotze called the victims the K-word before he drove into them.

The accused was convicted of crimen injuria in 2007 for calling a colleague the K-word.

There have been calls for calm and for the law to take its course.
