Hanekom lashes out at ANC leadership

African National Congress (ANC) National Executive Committee (NEC) member Derek Hanekom has once again lashed out at the current leadership, accusing it of betraying the party moral values and principles.

Hanekom was speaking at the funeral of anti-Apartheid stalwart Laloo Chiba in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg on Sunday.

A former MK platoon commander, Chiba spent 18 years on Robben Island with struggle icons like Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu and Ahmed Kathrada.

Hanekom, who chairs the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, urged party faithful to use next week’s national conference to elect those who will uphold the ANC’s values.

“Those elements that are seeking to destroy what we stood for their own self-enrichment. With respect to the conference we call for an open and fair election of the new ANC leadership that will be committed to stamping out corruption and the state capture,” says Hanekom.
