Hammanskraal homes reduced to small dams after heavy rains

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Communities are reeling following the torrential rains in Hammanskraal north of Pretoria

Their homes have been reduced to small dams after the heavy rains. Residents are counting the costs and hoping for intervention to assist their situation

Most of the families in the area are grateful to be alive, because they were able to save part of their homes.

But some of the household goods were damaged beyond repair, leaving entire sections submerged in water.

Resident Rose Sebolai says: “It seems like there was no measure used because the water just came rushing without any control and that is why we are in this situation now.”

Some say it’s a hopeless situation.

Another resident Sammy Ledwaba says: “We were up all the night, we couldn’t sleep because we were trying to see what we can move out but most of the things have been damaged.”

The rising sun was a ray of hope as the community continued clearing water from their homes.

But they are keeping their fingers crossed that the weather doesn’t turn again.

Tshwane Emergency Services says water has subsided in affected areas.

Meanwhile, at least 150 graves and headstones collapsed at the Olifantsvlei Cemetery, south of Johannesburg.

This was during the recent heavy rains in Gauteng.

Just meters away in the same burial section, graves and headstones are literally caving in.

A cause for concern for many families who buried their loved ones in the same grave yard .
