Gun owners cautioned after accidental deaths

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Police authorities in KwaZulu-Natal have urged licensed firearm owners to keep their guns safe to avoid unnecessary deaths.

This follows the accidental shooting of a two year old by his 11 year old brother while playing with his father’s firearm.

After seeing what had happened, he then turned the gun on himself. Neither of the children survived.

Spokesperson of Gun Free South Africa, Sara Chitambo says gun owners are not compliant in terms of how they are supposed to secure their firearms.

“The Firearms Control Act is very clear… if you have a gun at home, you are supposed to keep it in a safe with the key on you all the time. The gun owner is supposed to be in control of the gun at all times and any detraction from that results in a criminal act.”
